2020 EPU Almaviva, Maipo Valley
94 points James Suckling and Wine Advocate
EPU means "the second" in the Mapuche language, and that is exactly what it is: the second wine to the famous Almaviva, named after the hero in The Marriage of Figaro. Made as a Bordeaux blend, which means approx. 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Carmenere, 5% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot.
The project is under foreign ownership, namely Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who set out to show that Chilean wine could easily compete with the greats from Bordeaux. The local partner is top producer Concha y Toro.
The first wine, Almaviva, truly put Chile on the wine map, and now it has a little brother in the form of EPU. Almaviva spends 18 months in new French oak barrels, while EPU spends 12 months primarily in used barrels to promote a fruitier wine and a more elegant style, which is extremely becoming for the wine, which appears successful and balanced.
The biggest difference, besides the age of the vines and the barrel aging, is that Almaviva takes longer to mature and is therefore a wine for cellaring, whereas EPU is ready to drink from now (June 2024) and for the next 5-6 years.
