2018 Château Franc Mayne, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé
History and Winery
Château Franc Mayne is a historic estate located just outside the medieval town of Saint-Émilion. The property, with roots dating back to the 17th century, was classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1955. Today, the château is owned by Griet and Hervé Laviale (also owners of Château de Ferrand) and is operated with respect for nature and tradition. The wine is produced in collaboration with renowned oenologist Michel Rolland and perfectly expresses the limestone-dominated subsoil that characterizes the Saint-Émilion plateau. The combination of modern precision and classic craftsmanship results in a wine with both structure and finesse.
Grapes and Vinification
- Blend: approx. 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc
- Grapes are hand-harvested from 7 hectares of vineyards on the plateau and slopes
- Vinified in temperature-controlled steel tanks
- Aged 16–18 months in French oak barrels (approx. 50% new)
- Bottled without fining for maximum depth and character
Terroir and Origin
Appellation: Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France
Soil: Limestone plateau with clay and sand – provides both power and minerality
The high elevation and limestone-rich soil contribute to the wine's structured backbone and fine tannins. The warm 2018 vintage provided concentrated fruit, yet Franc Mayne retains its freshness thanks to the vibrant acidity from the terroir.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: Ripe blackberries, blueberries, violets, truffle, and a hint of cedar
- Palate: Full-bodied and elegant – dark fruit, fine acidity, and well-integrated oak
- Mouthfeel: Silky and harmonious with a long, complex finish and ripe tannins
Serving and Food Pairing
Serving temperature: 17–18 °C (decant 1–2 hours before serving)
- Veal or lamb – e.g., roasted rack of lamb with rosemary
- Beef tenderloin with mushrooms and red wine jus
- Game dishes – e.g., venison or pigeon
- Mature cheeses such as Comté, Saint-Nectaire, or Cantal
