Needless to say, the champagne is blended using grapes exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards, and some of the very best to be found in all of Champagne at that.
In the mid-19th century, Louis Roederer exported approximately 75% of their production to the Russian upper class, including the Tsar's family.
Just like today, it was extremely dangerous back then to be at the helm of Russia, and the various Tsars were naturally afraid of being eliminated by their enemies.
At that time, all champagnes were produced in black bottles with a punt at the bottom, which was used for the thumb when pouring.
The reigning Tsar told Louis Roederer that if he were to continue drinking their champagne, he wanted it in a transparent bottle without a punt. He was simply afraid that his enemies could hide explosives, either in the bottle or in the punt.
And thus, Cristal was born ........... and that is absolutely true :-)
