Frank Sinatra’s favorite wine – The story of Bolla from Veneto

Bolla’s connection to Frank Sinatra is more than just an anecdote – it is part of the winery's legacy. In the golden era of Las Vegas, it was Amarone from Bolla that was served at the late-night dinners when Sinatra and The Rat Pack gathered. According to legend, he refused to eat at restaurants that didn’t have Bolla on the wine list.
When Frank Sinatra walked into a restaurant, there was one thing he expected: “They better have Bolla.” The Italian winery from Veneto had won his heart – especially their iconic Amarone della Valpolicella.

But Bolla is much more than a celebrity favorite. It is one of Italy’s most traditional wineries, with over 140 years of winemaking, innovation, and international recognition behind it.

Bolla was among the very first to commercially produce Amarone della Valpolicella, and played an important role in establishing the wine type as a quality wine with global appeal. The winery was also early to indicate the vintage and origin on the label – something that is standard in the wine world today.

Today, Bolla’s portfolio includes classic Veneto wines such as:

    • Amarone della Valpolicella

    • Valpolicella Ripasso

    • Soave Classico

    • Bardolino

    • Pinot Grigio delle Venezie

With over 1,200 hectares of vineyards and strong partnerships with local winegrowers, Bolla has deep roots in the region’s wine traditions.

2020 Ripasso Classico "Le Poiane", Bolla

Classic Ripasso from Valpolicella – full-bodied, dark and silky smooth with warm, spicy nuances

    History and Winery

Bolla is one of Valpolicella's most historic wineries, founded in 1883 and known for their iconic Amarone and Ripasso wines. Their Ripasso Le Poiane is created using the traditional “ripassare” method, where Valpolicella wine is passed over the grape skins (pomace) from Amarone. This provides extra depth, body and aromatic complexity – a style Bolla has mastered to perfection.

    Grapes and Vinification

    • Corvina and Rondinella – classic grapes from the Valpolicella Classico zone
    • Hand-harvested from selected slopes in the Classico area
    • Ripasso method: the wine is re-fermented on Amarone pomace for extra body and fullness
    • Aged in oak barrels for round tannins and spicy nuances

    Terroir and Origin

    Region: Valpolicella Classico, Veneto

Soil: Calcareous clay and gravel – adds structure, warmth and finesse

The historic vineyards in the Classico valley produce wines with ripe, dark fruit and a natural aromatic intensity.

    Tasting Notes

    • Aroma: Cherries, dried fruits, cocoa, vanilla and liquorice
    • Taste: Full-bodied and rounded – ripe cherries, prunes, warm spices and a light touch of oak
    • Mouthfeel: Soft, dense and elegant – with silky tannins and a long, warm finish

    Serving and Food Pairing

    Serving temperature: 16–18 °C

    • Braised beef and slow-cooked dishes – the wine's fullness matches the deep flavours
    • Pasta with mushrooms, truffle or ragout
