Muscat de Rivesaltes comes from the Rivesaltes region, which is located around the town of Rivesaltes north of Perpignan, in the southern French wine region Côtes du Roussillon on the Mediterranean coast.
In Rivesaltes is one of the best areas, Vingrau, where the Muscat grapes, Frontignan and Alexandrie, are grown in the calcareous soil. The fields are laid out on terraces, where the grapes ripen under the influence of the hot days and cool nights. At harvest, the fully ripe grapes are selected. They are brought in and the fermentation process begins at a low, controlled temperature of 16°C, with the skins remaining in the must for the first 18 hours. The wine is fortified with grape spirit and fermentation stops. Muscat de Rivesaltes, Vin Doux Naturel, Caves Saint André, is quickly bottled to preserve the fine fruit and aroma of the Muscat grape.
The wine is a good companion for desserts, blue cheese and as an aperitif.
