2021 Amarone della Valpolicella, Santanova
Santanova Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG
2021 Santanova Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a classic, powerful, and generous Amarone from Veneto, made from Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone. The grapes are hand-harvested and dried for at least three months before the wine is fermented and aged for a minimum of two years in oak. The result is an intense red wine with ripe red fruit, great body, a soft structure, and impressive depth. An ideal wine for game, hearty meat dishes, and mature cheeses.
About the product
Santanova Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2021 is created using the traditional Amarone method, where hand-harvested grapes are dried before vinification. This process is called appassimento and concentrates the grapes' sugar, aroma, and flavor compounds.
The wine is made from the classic Valpolicella grapes Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone. After harvest, the grapes are dried on trays for at least three months under controlled conditions. Only then are the concentrated grapes pressed and fermented.
After fermentation, the wine matures for at least two years in oak barrels and is then aged in the bottle for approximately another 12 months. This long maturation gives the wine depth and complexity and rounds out the powerful fruit.
With 15% alcohol, this is a full-bodied Amarone, but the style is simultaneously harmonious and soft. The ripe fruit takes center stage, accompanied by the warm, concentrated character that has made Amarone one of Italy's most popular great red wines.
About Valpolicella and Amarone
Valpolicella is located in Veneto in northeastern Italy, north of Verona and east of Lake Garda. The area is famous for its red wines based on local grape varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella.
Amarone della Valpolicella is distinguished primarily by the appassimento method. After harvest, the grapes are allowed to dry slowly, causing them to lose some of their liquid. This makes the must more concentrated, giving the finished wine Amarone's characteristic combination of intense fruit, high alcohol, body, and complexity.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is one of the region's most prestigious wine types and is known for both its power and its aging potential.
Taste
Nose: Warm and intense with ripe red berries, cherries, and darker fruit nuances. With a little aeration, the wine develops further depth and warm spicy notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful with plenty of ripe fruit. The texture is harmonious and soft, while the wine's structure and high concentration provide great mouthfeel.
Finish: Long, warm, and persistent with ripe fruit, spices, and a classic Amarone-style depth.
Serving and aging
Serve 2021 Santanova Amarone della Valpolicella at approximately 18°C in a large red wine glass. We recommend opening the bottle 30-60 minutes before serving so that the wine's aroma and body have the opportunity to unfold.
Amarone is also a wine type that is well-suited for aging. Store the bottles lying down, in a cool and dark place. The 2021 vintage can both be enjoyed now and develop further mature and complex nuances with aging.
