Millepassi Bolgheri Superiore – Donna Olimpia 1898

2021 Millepassi Bolgheri Superiore DOC is the flagship wine from Donna Olimpia 1898 and a magnificent example of the modern Bolgheri style. The wine is crafted from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot and aged for 24 months in French barriques. Intense dark fruit, cocoa, spices, and balsamic nuances meet a full-bodied structure and dense, elegant tannins. A serious Bolgheri Superiore with great depth and length, well-suited for cellaring.

About the product

Millepassi is Donna Olimpia 1898's prestige cuvée and is produced as a Bolgheri Superiore DOC. In the 2021 vintage, the wine consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone, contributing structure, blackcurrant, and depth; Merlot provides roundness and generous fruit; while Petit Verdot adds color, spice, and extra intensity.

Following temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is matured for 24 months in French barriques, both new and used, followed by further bottle aging. This long maturation gives the wine complexity and an elegant oak influence, while preserving the concentrated fruit at its core.

The 2021 Millepassi is a powerful yet harmonious wine. Ripe red and dark berries are combined with cocoa, spices, and balsamic nuances, while the dense tannin structure provides both length and an excellent foundation for further development in the bottle.

The name Millepassi means "a thousand paces" and refers to the ancient Roman unit of measurement milium, equivalent to approximately 1,480 meters. The estate is bisected by the ancient Roman Via Emilia, which is the source of the name for Donna Olimpia's top wine.

About the region

Bolgheri is located on the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany and has developed into one of Italy's most prestigious regions for red wine. Unlike classic Tuscany, where Sangiovese plays the lead role, Bolgheri has achieved international fame with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

Donna Olimpia 1898 is situated in the heart of Bolgheri, where the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea is significant for the vineyards' microclimate. Cooling sea breezes moderate the hot summer days, helping the grapes retain freshness and aromatic precision throughout the long ripening period.

Bolgheri Superiore is the area's more ambitious DOC category, where longer maturation and greater structure allow for wines of significant complexity and aging potential. Millepassi represents precisely this concentrated and elegant side of Bolgheri.

Tasting notes

Nose: Intense and complex with blueberries, blackberries, and ripe red berries accompanied by cocoa, cinnamon, black pepper, and elegant balsamic nuances.

Palate: Full-bodied, creamy, and concentrated with ripe dark fruit and great depth. The tannins are dense and well-structured, while the power of the Cabernet Sauvignon is balanced by the roundness of the Merlot and the spicy character of the Petit Verdot.

Finish: Long and persistent with dark berries, cocoa, spices, and balsamic tones. A complex finish with fine tannin structure and great length.

Serving and storage

Best served at 16-18°C in a large Bordeaux glass. The 2021 Millepassi still has a youthful structure and will benefit from decanting for 1-2 hours before serving. The wine is already impressive, but its concentration, acidity, and tannin structure make it particularly suitable for further bottle aging.

What pairs with it?

2021 Millepassi Bolgheri Superiore pairs particularly well with:

  • Beef tenderloin, ribeye, and grilled beef
  • Rack of lamb and slow-roasted lamb
  • Game such as venison, roe deer, and wild boar
  • Braised meat dishes with mushrooms and herbs
  • Mature Pecorino and other strong, firm cheeses

How is Millepassi aged?
2021 Millepassi is aged for 24 months in French barriques, both new and used, before undergoing further aging in the bottle. The oak aging adds complexity and structure without overpowering the wine's concentrated fruit.

What does "Millepassi" mean?

What is the difference between Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore?
