2023 Massetino, IGT Toscana
The elegant little brother to Masseto – silky-smooth Merlot with freshness, depth, and Tuscan finesse
History and Winery
Massetino was introduced in 2019 as a new chapter in the history of Masseto – one of the world's most iconic wines. The wine is produced at the same estate in Bolgheri under the direction of the Masseto team, led by Axel Heinz. The idea behind Massetino was to create a wine that expresses the same terroir and craftsmanship as Masseto, but in a more accessible and fruit-driven style. Every element – from vineyard work to barrel aging – follows the same uncompromising standards, and the result is a wine that combines structure, energy, and elegance in perfect balance.
Grapes and Vinification
- Blend: 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
- Grapes are hand-harvested from younger plots around the Masseto vineyard
- Fermented in concrete tanks with manual punch-downs for maximum extraction
- Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (50% new)
- Followed by bottle aging at the estate before release
Vintage 2023
The 2023 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by a mild spring, a warm summer, and a cool September, ensuring perfect ripening and preserved freshness. Massetino 2023 shows deep, ripe fruit, refined acidity, and a silky-smooth structure – a vintage that combines concentration and elegance in superb fashion.
Terroir and Origin
Region: Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
Soil: Clay and sand with calcareous elements – providing structure, power, and finesse
The Masseto hill is located just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean, where the sea breeze moderates the temperature and creates ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The combination of blue clay soil and Bolgheri’s microclimate gives the wines a unique balance between deep fruit and mineral freshness.
