2023 PSI, Ribera del Duero, Dominio de Pingus
History and Winery
Dominio de Pingus was founded by the Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck in 1995 and has since put Ribera del Duero on the world map. Following the legendary wines Pingus and Flor de Pingus, Sisseck launched the PSI project in 2007 as a tribute to the region's older winegrowers and old Tempranillo vineyards. PSI is built on collaboration with more than 200 small winegrowers and aims to showcase the authentic expression of Ribera del Duero in a fresher, more terroir-driven style. The wine is produced at Bodegas y Viñedos Alnardo in La Horra, where tradition, biodynamic principles, and gentle vinification go hand in hand.
Grapes and Vinification
- Primarily Tempranillo with a small portion of Garnacha – from old vines (30–60 years) in Ribera del Duero
- Hand-harvested grapes from high-altitude parcels (850 m a.s.l.) with low yields
- Traditional fermentation in concrete tanks with wild yeast
- Aged for approximately 18 months in a combination of large vats and used French oak barrels
- Minimal filtration – the wine is bottled with respect for its natural structure
Terroir and Origin
Region: Ribera del Duero, Castilla y León, Spain
Soil: Calcareous clay and sandstone – contributing finesse, energy, and mineral depth
The old vines on the high-altitude plateaus of Ribera del Duero enjoy significant temperature differences between day and night, resulting in intense aromas and balanced acidity – the signature of PSI's fresh, elegant style.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: Fresh cherries, blueberries, violets, herbs, and subtle oak notes of cedar and spice
- Palate: Elegant and focused – red and dark fruit in harmony with fine tannins and vibrant acidity
