The Verdict Cabernet Sauvignon – Shinas Estate
2022 The Verdict from Shinas Estate is an intense and full-bodied Australian Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of dark fruit, excellent structure, and mature richness. Blackcurrant, dark cherries, and plums meet cedar and warm spices, while 24 months of aging in used French and American oak barrels provide depth and complexity. A generous Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe tannins, good freshness, and a long, harmonious finish.
About the product
The Verdict is Shinas Estate's Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine with both great fruit concentration and structure. The 2022 vintage is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and displays a full-bodied, mature style where dark fruit is combined with surprisingly beautiful freshness.
The grapes for the 2022 vintage come from Adelaide Hills, where a dry and mild growing season provided a long and steady ripening period. This allowed the grapes to develop great aromatic intensity while preserving their natural acidity and freshness.
After harvest, the grapes were gently crushed and fermented in open stainless steel tanks. The wine had approximately three weeks of skin contact before being pressed and transferred to used 300-liter French and American oak barrels. The Verdict matured here for a full 24 months before blending and bottling.
The long barrel aging provides extra complexity and structure, but because used barrels are employed, the mature Cabernet fruit is still allowed to play the lead role.
The name "The Verdict" is also a characteristic example of George Shinas's humor. He has worked as a judge, and the courtroom has inspired the names of several of the estate's wines – including The Verdict, The Guilty, The Innocent, and The Executioner.
About the producer and the region
Shinas Estate is an Australian family producer with more than eight generations of winemaking tradition. The Shinas family has Greek roots and emigrated to Australia in the early 1950s. For many years, the family's wine was primarily consumed privately or given to family and friends, but demand grew, and in 2002, Shinas Estate Australia was established.
The estate is located near Mildura and the Murray River in northwestern Victoria, where George Shinas has produced small quantities of handmade wine for many years. The philosophy has been to keep yields low and harvest based on taste and optimal ripeness rather than just the calendar.
For the The Verdict 2022 specifically, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were sourced from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. The region's cooler conditions and long ripening period contribute freshness and structure, which balance the wine's mature and concentrated fruit.
Tasting notes
Nose: Intense and inviting with blackcurrant, dark cherries, and ripe plums. After a bit of aeration, nuances of cedar, spices, and subtle oak emerge.
Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated with ripe dark fruit at the center. Blackcurrant and cherries are combined with warm spices and fine oak notes. The tannins are mature and structured, while well-preserved freshness ensures balance.
Finish: Long and harmonious with dark fruit, spices, and cedar. The ripe tannins linger, giving the wine a beautiful and structured finish.
Serving and storage
Best served at 16-18°C in a spacious Bordeaux glass. The Verdict has plenty of concentration and will benefit from about 30-60 minutes in a decanter before serving. This allows the dark fruit and spicy oak nuances to open up further.
The wine can be enjoyed now for its mature and generous fruit, but the combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, freshness, tannin structure, and long barrel aging also offers the potential for further development in the bottle.
