The Executioner – Shinas Estate
2021 The Executioner from Shinas Estate is the estate’s powerful top cuvée and an intense Australian red wine composed of 55% Shiraz, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Viognier. The wine comes from old vines and is aged for a full 30 months in French barriques. Dark berries, blackcurrants, and cherries meet mocha, chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, and spices in a concentrated yet beautifully balanced wine with great depth and a long finish.
About the product
The Executioner is the flagship of Shinas Estate and was created as a combination of three of George Shinas' wines: The Guilty Shiraz, The Verdict Cabernet Sauvignon, and The Innocent Viognier.
The result is an unusual blend consisting of 55% Shiraz, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Viognier. Shiraz provides ripe dark fruit, spice, and body; Cabernet Sauvignon adds blackcurrant, structure, and tannins; while the small amount of Viognier contributes aromatic finesse and floral nuances.
The use of Viognier in a red wine may initially seem surprising, but the technique has long traditions in the northern Rhône, where Viognier is used alongside Syrah, among others. Here, the white grape provides an extra aromatic lift to the powerful red wine.
The vines for The Executioner are about 50 years old, and the wine is matured for a full 30 months in French barriques, of which approximately 25% are new. The long barrel aging provides depth and complexity with notes of mocha, chocolate, vanilla, and tobacco, but the concentrated fruit remains distinct.
Production is limited, and The Executioner was created as the most ambitious wine in the Shinas Estate range – a great Australian red wine with power, maturity, and personality.
About the producer and the region
Shinas Estate is located in northwestern Victoria by the Murray River. The area has a warm and dry climate, where limited irrigation and relatively nutrient-poor soils result in low yields and concentrated grapes.
The Shinas family's history with viticulture and winemaking spans eight generations. The vineyards on the estate have roots dating back to 1898, and today Shinas Estate is especially associated with powerful, mature, and characterful Australian red wines.
The man behind the wines, George Shinas, has worked as a judge alongside his winemaking. This provided inspiration for the estate's characteristic names: The Guilty, The Verdict, The Innocent – and at the top of the hierarchy, The Executioner.
Taste
Nose: Intense and full-bodied with dark berries, blackcurrants, and cherries followed by mocha, dark chocolate, vanilla, and spicy nuances. With aeration, fine floral tones and a hint of tobacco emerge.
Palate: Rich and concentrated with cherries, blackcurrants, and dark berries at the center. Shiraz provides body and spice, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and firmness. Notes of vanilla, pipe tobacco, mocha, and chocolate provide further complexity.
Finish: Long and intense with dark fruit, spices, chocolate, and fine oak tones. Despite the wine's great concentration, it appears harmonious and well-structured rather than heavy or jammy.
Serving and storage
Best served at 16-18°C in a large red wine glass. The Executioner is a concentrated wine and will benefit from 1-2 hours in a decanter before serving, allowing both the fruit and the complex oak notes to open up.
The combination of old vines, concentrated fruit, Cabernet Sauvignon's tannins, and the long barrel aging also gives the wine good potential for further development with proper storage.
What does it pair with?
2021 The Executioner is particularly well-suited to:
- Ribeye, sirloin, and beef tenderloin
- BBQ and slow-roasted beef
- Rack of lamb and lamb with herbs
- Game and hearty stews
- Mature hard cheeses like Comté and Manchego
