2009 Ra Nui Gewrztraminer, Marlboroug Wairau Valley, New ZeelandVarenummer: 108108
A Single Vineyard wine, grapes were sourced from our own Cob Cottage Vineyard. The Cob Cottage vineyard lies just below Summer Valley in the Riverlands area of the Wairau Valley, comprising heavier soils with gravel and some clay components. This vineyard is relatively sheltered from the prevailing Nor’Wester (this strong wind is Marlborough’s best kept secret!) and is warmer than most other areas in the Wairau valley. This was our first small crop of Gewürztraminer grapes from this uniquely favoured vineyard.
All the grapes for this wine were hand picked on 8 April. The grapes were picked into small bins and were immediately transported to the winery and on arrival transferred directly into the small press. The grapes were then given a very light and slow “champagne” style whole bunch press resulting in a low extraction of free run and lightly pressed juice. All juice was then cold settled for 48 hours, then racked with an aromatic strain of yeast added. Fermentation was primarily carried out in stainless steel tanks and after fermentation remained in contact with the fine yeast lees. A small portion (10%) was also aged in old French oak adding complexity and slightly developed characteristics. Finally the wine was blended together, cold stabilised and filtered prior to bottling.
A pale straw/yellow hue. An exotic nose of lychee, honeysuckle and stone fruit characters combined with Nashi pear and citrus peel overtones. On the palate, slightly viscal richness, with pear, lychee and spice flavours, the small oaked portion adding a further layer of depth and complexity, complemented by soft acidity and a richly textured finish. A luscious style of Marlborough Gewürztraminer – perfect with asian food!!
